Summer Training School on Dating Methods and Their Applications
Potsdam - Gliwice, 6-13th September 2012
with Introductory On-Line Course

Organized by GFZ (Potsdam, Germany) and GADAM Centre (Gliwice, Poland)
in the frame of the INTIMATE – COST Action ES0907
INTegrating Ice core, MArine and TErrestrial records - 60,000 to 8,000 years ago

20 participants from nine INTIMATE countries and one from a non-INTIMATE country took part in lectures, visiting laboratories and exercises in Potsdam (6-9th Sept. 2012) and in Gliwice (10-13th Sept. 2012). The teaching was carried out by scientists employed at the GFZ (Potsdam, Germany), Centre for Ice and Climate, Niels Bohr Institute (Copenhagen, Denmark), GADAM Centre, SUT (Gliwice, Poland) and ETH (Zürich, Switzerland), who have first-hand experience in disciplines like varve-, tree-ring and tephro-chronology, ice-core data analyses, radiocarbon dating, luminescence dating, lead-210 and caesium dating, high resolution gamma spectroscopy, stable isotope analyses and the interpretation of the obtained data.

All participants were found enthusiastic and highly-motivated young scientists. They carefully listened to all lectures, asked a lot of questions during visiting labs and exercises and consult results of their own studies.

At the last day of the School, the participants were asked to express their opinion about the event. Their general impression is really positive and all think that it is worth to organize the next such school. Other remarks were as follows:

  • Meeting other young scientists and discussing with them was very important for participants;
  • Exercises and visiting labs were pointed out as the most fruitful part of the school. In the opinion of almost all participants these practical parts could be broaden in the case of organizing new school;
  • The students proposed to organize a next step of such course - in-depth course dedicated to modeling with using OxCal and Bacon software.
